| After Nebraska and Colorado left for greener($$$) pastures I was under the impression that the BIG 12 was on its way to the funeral. Death can bring life, Or in our case an estimated 20-25 Million dollars in TV Revenues by switching to the PAC 10. Currently we make anywhere from 7-10 million a year in the Big 12. Not to mention the Quality of opponents that would come to Lubbock, bringing with them a boost in the local economy as well as national spotlight. The question can be simply answered as; would you rather play USC, UCLA, and OREGON or Iowa State, Baylor, Kansas State?
Since first reading the reasons why Nebraska really did want to leave its easy to see. The big 12 is TEXAS's league. The big 12 is so behind in TV revenues is makes less than the PAC 10, Big 10, and SEC. How can the 2nd "best" conference, whose games produce the 4th most watched game in the history of college sports (UT v Tech 2008) receive less money than 0-11 Washington vs. 1-11 Washington State Its because Dan Beebe is an idiot. The big 12 uneven revenue sharing is unbelievable
Big 12 2009 TV revenues 1. Texas: $10.2 million 2. Oklahoma: $9.8 million 3. Kansas: $9.24 million 4. Texas A&M: $9.22 million 5. Nebraska: $9.1 million 6. Missouri: $8.4 million 7. Texas Tech: $8.23 million 8. Kansas State: $8.21 million 9. Oklahoma State: $8.1 million 10. Colorado: $8.0 million 11. Iowa State: $7.4 million 12. Baylor: $7.1 million
By passing on the Pac 16 we are giving up the chance of making 20-25 million a YEAR!!
by factoring in all of the major cities that the proposed PAC 16 would cover we would be looking at TV revenues of
Potential Total Deal: $376,676,635.52 Per School: $23,542,289.72 link
This is just the money potential. Now we start to look at the potential for academic growth with our university. This is the fun part.
2009 PAC 10 Endowment Stanford University - $17.2 billion [6] University of Southern California - $3.6 billion [7] University of California, Berkeley - $3.1 billion[8] University of California, Los Angeles - $2.6 billion [9] University of Washington - $2.2 billion[10] Washington State University - $678 million [11] University of Colorado at Boulder - $593 million [12] University of Arizona - $519 million [13] University of Oregon - $498 million [14] Arizona State University - $494 million [15] Oregon State University - $476 million [16]
2009 BIG 12 Endowment Texas - $12.1 billion [14] Texas A&M - $5.1 billion [14] Kansas - $1.2 billion [14] Nebraska - $1.2 billion [14] Missouri - $1.1 billion [14] Oklahoma - $1.1 billion [14] Baylor - $1 billion [14] Colorado - $870 million [14] Texas Tech - $792 million [14] Oklahoma State - $617 million [14] Iowa State - $569 million [14] Kansas State - $346 million [14]
With our hopes of gaining Tier 1 status not in certainty, joining the PAC 10 with the likes of Stanford, USC, And UCLA give us the best chance at making Tier 1 happen.
Now the the BIG 12 is staying the Stronghold TEXAS has on the conference is getting stronger.
According to sources familiar with the deal, Texas stands to earn between $20 million and $25 million in television revenue, including money from its own network. The UT network figures to generate between $3 million and $5 million, according to sources.
According to sources, the deal will mean more money for Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma, who all stand receive $20 million from the new deal. The other seven schools in the Big 12 would make between $14 million and $17 million, but would nearly double what they currently receive in TV revenue (roughly $7 million to $9 million).
So Now Tech will play 4th fiddle to Texas, A&M, and OU. We loose out on what could be 7-11 Million by joining the PAC 10. The rich get richer, the middle stay the same.
Now the scary part. With all of the Talk of these SUPER CONFERENCES... you have to ask yourself, If it doesn't happen now, When will it, and will we be in the same position we are in today? After passing on the PAC 10 it appears UTAH will get the nod joining the 12 team conference. Now the Pac 10, and BIG 10 have 12 teams with 4 open spots to make it 16. When the time comes who will be taken? TEXAS, TECH, OU, OSU? or TEXAS, A&M, OU, OSU. I believe we are in trouble in the future. This deal is fine for now..... but in 5 years we may be looking back on this day from the Mountain West dreaming about the good ol' Days of being in a major conference.

| Great write-up.
You have to remind yourself though- if we are able to see this, surely those in the Texas Tech Front Office are as well and will hopefully make the right moves for the best interest of Tech.
Perhaps its time to unhitch the wagon from UT?

| New TV deal with Big 12 minus 2 estimates >$20 million for UT, A&M, and OU and $14-17 mill for everyone else, plus UT can still start their own network, so more $$$ for them.
We don't have a choice. We are UT's bitch, and so is OU and OSU. A&M gets more guaranteed money than they would in the SEC. UT gets more money and the network they wanted all along, and since we are UT's bitch, we do what they do.
The only miracle to save it now would be FSN guaranteeing more money to the proposed PAC 16 than ESPN has on the table for the new Big 12 contract. FSN won't do it, because they like everyone else knows the Big 12 will eventually fail, and they can save a ton of money now by picking up the realigned teams later, whenever that inevitable day may be. Financially (why all this started in the first place), UT has to take the deal on the table for the Big 12...err Big 10 now?

| Granted the Pac 10 has already been chatting up Utah, I would much rather see Utah come to the Big 12 than BYU. It's like exchanging Mormons for Mormons, but still.
I'm with Brian on this one, great write-up Schultzee. Everything mentioned has been the topic of discussion on the radio show for the past 2 1/2 weeks, so you nailed it.
I'm praying that the A&M will sac up and join the SEC.

Funny you ask. Aaron Dickens (Managing Editor) for texastech.rivals.com just responded to my post. I asked... what happens now. His Reply: The Big 12 will sit tight. I don't think they have to do anything with the BCS -- the league's AQ status should not be in question and I don't expect the conference to apply for a waiver to keep the conference championship game in place.

Are you full time with Fox now? Nope not yet. I work from 2:30 to 6:30 usually. I think they reevaluate me after this summer, so we'll see.

Thanks for the link. Pretty good summary of everything. I admit there has always been a shadow of UT over the other Texas schools, but before this you could at least lie to yourself as if it was not there. Now, our pants are down for the Nation to see.

Obviously, people would expect us to have our wagon hitched to Texas, but OU- National Champions? Even more embarassing.
